Northwestern Regional Housing Authority has provided essential housing services to our less fortunate neighbors in the mountain counties every working day of the past 30 years.

The housing choice voucher program is a federal program that helps very low-income families, the elderly and the disabled to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. Participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, mobile homes and apartments and are not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects.

NRHA owns and manages two public housing developments - Woodland Apartments in Yancey County and Cub Creek Apartments in Wilkes County. Federal funding through this program enables the PHA to provide decent and safe assisted rental housing to eligible low-income, elderly, and disabled families and individuals.

The Housing Authority maintains and performs certified property management in several locations in order to provided reduced rent to qualified residents.

This program employs a variety of financing mechanisms and development styles to build apartments for families, elderly and handicapped individuals. These developments employ private investment, local commercial lending and limited government assistance.

What is FSS?

Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) is a HUD-sponsored program that encourages communities to develop local strategies that will help Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) families obtain employment leading to economic independence and self-sufficiency. Northwestern Regional Housing Authority (NRHA) has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as a HUD Approved Housing Counseling Agency since 1985. The two major components of the comprehensive counseling program are Homeownership Counseling and Rental Counseling.

Housing Counseling is offered in the areas of Homebuyer Education, Pre-Purchase, Post-Purchase-Non-Delinquency and Reverse Mortgage. We do not charge for any counseling service.
